1999 World Water Week in Stockholm

Leading Experts to Discuss Urban Water Issues; King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden to Present $150,000 Stockholm Water Prize to American, Swiss Scientists

9th Stockholm Water Symposium: Urban Stability Through Integrated Water-Related Management August 9-12

By 2025 the urban population in emerging economic regions of the world will grow by 2.5 billion - nearly the current population of India and China combined - and place extreme demands on water supply and sanitation systems. The 1999 Stockholm Water Symposium, "Urban Stability Through Integrated Water-Related Management," focuses on the issues facing these growing urban and peri-urban areas. More than 600 experts from 80 countries will analyze the problems and seek constructive strategies to provide safe, sufficient water resources to urban dwellers; to mitigate the effects of urban floods; and to avoid the collapse of cities when residents' livelihoods are disturbed by problems with water supply and sanitation, or by unemployment when industries are forced to close down due to severe water pollution.

Special related activities include a "SIWI Seminar for Young Scientists"; the SIWI-International Water Resources Association Seminar: "Towards Upstream/Downstream Hydrosolidarity"; and important presentations from the Global Water Partnership and the World Water Vision for the 21st Century.

Stockholm Water Prize Award Ceremony
August 12
Professor James J. Morgan from the USA and his late colleague and mentor Professor Werner Stumm from Switzerland will be honored with the $150,000 Stockholm Water Prize for their accomplishments in aquatic chemistry. Their research improved understanding of chemical and physical processes in the water environment and led to the development of better techniques to treat drinking water and wastewater. HM King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden is Patron of the Stockholm Water Prize and presents the award annually to an institution, organization, individual or a company that has made a substantial contribution to the preservation, enhancement or availability of the world's water resources.
