Ancient sewer sheds new light on Abbey

Ancient artefacts found in a mediaeval sewer near Paisley Abbey have shed new light on the importance of the 12th century monastery and church.

Delegates to a major international conference being held this weekend will hear that silt in the sewer, discovered in 1990, was examined and found to contain items which revealed a great deal about the lifestyle of the Abbey’s Clunaic monks.

Among the items discovered were the earliest known examples of written music in Scotland and pollen from an exotic spice, which showed that the Monks had well established trading links with Europe and beyond.

West of Scotland Water in the main sponsor of the event - which is attracting delegates from as far as the USA - and the organisers are Renfrewshire Local History Forum.

John Malden, author of Monastery and Abbey of Paisley and a driving force behind the conference, said: "I am delighted that more than 200 delegates are coming. It will introduce the monastery and abbey of Paisley to an even wider audience."

Delegates will have an opportunity to visit the mediaeval drain.

Ernie Chambers, Chief Executive of West of Scotland Water, said: "The Authority is delighted to be the main sponsor of the conference and we wish the organisers every success. Nowadays we tend to take for granted the vast network of sewers under our towns and villages, which fulfil a vital role, especially in relation to public health.

"Here, at Paisley Abbey, we see evidence from Mediaeval times of the desire to have drainage systems of an elaborate and well-constructed nature."
