After long and difficult negotions the VEEC (Vienna Engineering and Environmental Consortium) emerged victorious from the international tender for the restoration of West Lake in Hanoi. The VEEC is a project-specific consortium of VA TECH WABAG and Wien Kanal GmbH, a Vienna City company. Having a share of 90 percent,
VA TECH WABAG will be heading this prestigious project in Vietnam.
Comprehensive restoration concept with an assignment value of
EUR 31,67 M.
West Lake, which is situated in one of Hanoi' s more wealthy districts, has had to suffer badly from the mainly untreated sewage deriving from the city. An intricate restoration concept, however, is now to improve environmental conditions. The assignment, at a value of EUR 31.67 M., comprises the following:
- Conception, engineering, supply of mechanical and electrical
equipment
- supervision of erection and implementation
of a purifying plant, as well as
a water treatment plant to ensure the supply of
drinking water to the West Lake District
Because of its volume and its ecological implications, the project of the West Lake District People' s Committee of Hanoi holds model-project status for the government' s intentions to improve the environment. Moreover, this is the largest environmental project on a soft-loan basis to be conducted in Vietnam.
The restoration of West Lake is VA TECH WABAG' s first project in Vietnam and, at the same, the most important undertaking in Southeast Asia in recent years. The acquisition of the project confirms the strategic decision to expand in Southeast Asia and strengthens the market position of VA TECH WABAG in this region. The project will commence in January of 2002; its end is foreseen for 2005.
