Press releases 24/05/2000 Thames WaterThames Water Sponsors Shakespear in Istanbul
Thames Water is pleased to support the Royal Shakespeare Company's performance of 'The Taming of the Shrew' in Istanbul, as part of Britain-Turkey 2000's celebration of the best of British and Turkish culture.
In 1995, Thames Water won the Izmit Industrial and Domestic Water Supply Project, with partners, Gama, Guris, Mitsui & Co and the Sumitomo Corporation, then the first water Build Operate Transfer (BOT) contract in Turkey.
Opened by His Excellency Demirel, the then President of Turkey, in November 1998, the project was completed on budget and three months ahead of schedule, and in January 1999 the scheme went into commercial operation. The new water infrastructure now provides a reliable, and high-quality source of drinking water to the province of Kocaeli, along with the region's growing industrial sector.
Thames Water will operate and maintain the new supply system for a period of 15 years before it is handed back to Izmit Greater Municipality free of charge. Frank Pawley, Thames Water's Chief Executive Officer, Turkey and Middle East, said: "Thames Water has been active in Turkey for 25 years and hopes to be here for many more years to come. We fully support the Britain-Turkey 2000 initiative and are proud to play our part by sponsoring the Royal Shakespeare Company in their first visit to Istanbul."
The Royal Shakespeare Company will be performing at Muhsin Ertugrul Sahnesi, in Istanbul, from this evening (24 May) until Friday 27 May.
Thames Water is one of the world's largest companies focused on water and wastewater services. The company serves over one million customers in Turkey, 12 million in London and the Thames Valley, and 21 million worldwide.
