03/12/98 Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux Creates a Worldwide Research and Development Network in Water-Related Activities
Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux is developing a worldwide research and development network in water-related technology and has formed two new research centres, one in the United Kingdom and the other in the Asia Pacifc region.
The Northumbrian Lyonnaise Technology and Research Centre (NLTRC) based in Newcastle, (UK) was inaugurated on 4th March 1998 and specialises in managing exisiting water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Research conducted at the NLTRC is focused on innovative technology for rehabilitation and maintenance of complex water supply and wastewater networks. Improving network maintenance helps reduce investment expenses for water services.
The Asian Technology and Research Network (ASTRAN) is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and was inaugurated on 12th March 1998. The ASTRAN network includes several research centres in the Asia Pacific region. These are located in Kuala Lumpur, Macau, Manila, Jakarta and Sydney. Research is focused on developing innovative technology for water resources management. The ASTRAN network also aims to transfer Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux know-how and technology to all of its operations in the Asia Pacific region.
These two new centres also rely on local expertise in specific water management issues. They contribute to results of the research Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux has conducted in France since 1934. As the group’s main research centre, the CIRSEE specialises in water quality analysis and research, developing new water treatment processes and re-using wastewater.
Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux has set up this worldwide research and technology network for several reasons. The Group’s international expansion, the fact that it supplies water to more than 70 million people in 30 countries across the world, and its aim to improve customer satisfaction have led Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux to develop and regionalise its research efforts. At the same time, it has been focusing on two new areas, network and ressource management, to preserve its leading position in the global water market.
Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux invests around US$60 million a year in water research, employing 400 people in this field. This is the world’s highest budget for private sector water-related research.
Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux’s annual investment for the group in Research and Technology is around US$200 million.
