The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has commented EU’s “Working document on sludge”, which is part of the work to establish a new sludge directive regarding the use of sewage sludge. This work is being performed within the General Directorate’s department for the Environment.
One of the comments given by Sweden through EPA is:
“Since new techniques for phosphorus recovery are now being developed, we feel that the new Directive should seek not only to promote various conventional ways of using sewage sludge, but also to open the door for alternative ways to utilise phosphorus in sludge. One such way is the KREPRO process (now being installed in Malmö in the south of Sweden) where phosphorus is recovered as a concentrated fraction and the sludge is combusted with heat recovery. Other methods are being developed elsewhere.”
