ITT Flygt Press Releases, June 1999
The Swedish Junior Water Prize 1999 "Biological Wastewater Treatment - the reduction of nitrogen in wastewater" - a Baltic Sea project

ITT Flygt, the main sponsor, and SIWI, the organiser, are happy to announce that this year's Swedish Junior Water Prize has been awarded. The winner is Eva Håkansson, from Nynashamn High School, on the outskirts of Stockholm. Eva's project, "Biological Wastewater Treatment", examines how different processes of nitrogen reduction work, and the costs involved. The basis of the paper is that eutrophication of the Baltic Sea has resulted in bigger wastewater treatment plants including the integration of biological nitrogen removal. The different methods examined by effectiveness, cost and environmental impact to achieve this were; wetlands, fluidised beds and conventional biological processes.

The nomination committee's reasoning behind the award was that "Eva has written a technical paper on different methods of the removal of nitrogen from wastewater. Extensive data has been gathered from Swedish sewage treatment plants and evaluated methodically considering the grade of reduction, the cost and the environmental impacts."

The nomination committee consists of representatives from The Board of Education, The Young Researchers Society, high schools, universities and industry.

Entry to the prize is open to all students in Sweden under the age of 20 that have completed a project on water and the environment. The winner of the prize receives 30,000 SEK, which is divided between the winner and their school, to be used for further funding of environmental water projects. The winner then goes on to represent Sweden in the international final, The Stockholm Junior Water Prize on August 10th. Along with Eva, in the running for the international prize will be students from 15 countries, representing five continents, who have also won their countries' respective prizes.
