ONDEO to build world's largest ever reverse osmosis seawater desalination plant with a 62 million m3 capacity per year in Fujairah (United Arab Emirates)
Ondeo Degrémont (Suez) has been awarded a contract by Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction, a Korean Group, to build the world's largest ever reverse osmosis seawater desalination plant with a 62 million m3 annual production capacity.
The Fujairah contract is worth almost 100 million Euros and covers all aspects of construction, from design, process equipment supply through to commissioning. Effective since 4th September 2001, it aims to be producing water as early as April 2003.
This reverse osmosis desalination plant is part of a wider construction project for a 630 MW power plant that also requires a thermal desalination unit. Both units will boost the drinking water production capacity of the Abu Dhabi Emirate and surrounding areas to 164 million m3 per year. It will be the first time that membrane (physical filtration) and thermal (evaporation) technologies have been combined. This cost-efficient design is expected to meet with further success in the near future as it optimizes production costs involved in turning sea water into drinking water.
This win further strengthens Ondeo's leading position in the field of reverse osmosis desalination and follows two recent similar contract wins in Spain : Carboneras (44 million m3/year) and Bahia de Palma (25 million m3/year).
For Ondeo, this contract represents a true milestone in the Group's expansion in the Middle East, a region where the desalination market is expected to experience strong growth.
ONDEO Degrémont is the water treatment plant specialist within ONDEO (Suez). Present in more than 70 countries with a workforce of almost 3,000 ONDEO Degrémont reported turnover of EUR 854 million in 2000.
