American Water Works Company Launches Second Annual Hoops And Heroes Scholarship Program

Female Scholar-Athletes Across the Country Write Essays for Chance to Attend Women's Collegiate National Championship Basketball Game and $1,000 Educational Savings Bonds

American Water Works Company (NYSE:AWK) today announced the kick-off of its second annual Hoops and Heroes scholarship program. Designed to reward female high school basketball players for their academic and athletic achievements, Hoops and Heroes will award eight students from across the U.S. with a trip to St. Louis to attend the 2001 women’s national championship game (April 1) and a $1,000 educational savings bond. Eight second-place winners will collect a $500 educational savings bond.

"We're proud to again reward the academic, personal and athletic accomplishments of young women. As a former player who has taken the lessons learned from the world of sports into the world of business, I understand the integral role sports have in shaping future leaders," said Marilyn Ware, chairman of the board, American Water Works Company.

This week, American Water Works invited approximately 800 girls’ high school basketball coaches throughout the company’s service areas in 23 states to nominate a player on their team to represent the school as its scholar-athlete "hero." The company is asking each student to write an essay describing how participating in sports has contributed to their personal growth. Last year’s award-winning program generated over 100 responses. This year, a panel of St. Louis political, academic, and media leaders will judge an expected 400-plus student essays.

The inaugural program, based in the 2000 championship city of Philadelphia, culminated in an awards ceremony last April highlighted by keynote speaker Robin Roberts of ESPN, WNBA assistant coach Anne Donovan, former chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee Bernadette McGlade and the executive director of PWB 2000 - the committee that ran the 2000 NCAA Women’s Final Four - Cathy Andruzzi (current Hoops and Heroes consultant). The 2001 awards ceremony will take place on March 31 at the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame (which also houses the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame), a unique and interactive venue located in downtown St. Louis across from Busch Stadium.

American Water Works Company, headquartered in Voorhees, NJ, is the largest and most geographically diverse investor-owned water utility enterprise in the U.S. The Company’s utility subsidiaries and affiliates serve approximately 10 million people in 23 states.
