Anglian Water International and Beijing agree deal for world’s largest water project
Anglian Water International and its partner Mitsubishi are one tantalising step away from signing the contract for the largest water project in the international water market.
A year on from the announcement that it was the preferred bidder, the consortium yesterday (Sunday 28 April) initialled the contract with the Beijing Municipal Government.
The process now enters the final phase where the consortium has eight months to raise the necessary finance before the contract itself can be signed.
Serving the Chinese capital, the US$200 million contract, ‘Beijing No10’, is to design, build and operate a water treatment plant for 20 years, to provide safe drinking water for two million Beijing residents.
The plant is needed to help meet future demand as Beijing continues to expand and it looks ahead to hosting the 2008 Olympic Games. To do this, a 76- kilometre pipeline (2.2 metre diameter) will be built to bring extra water for treatment from the Miyun reservoir.
Tony Eckford, managing director of Anglian Water International, said: "We are extremely pleased to have concluded this important stage of the project and have already begun working towards financial close."
