Anglian Water International wins Queen's Award for Enterprise

Anglian Water International (AWI) has become the first utility to win the prestigious Queen’s Award for International Enterprise, for its ‘outstanding achievement’ exporting its water and wastewater expertise.

The company now serves some eight million overseas customers with water, wastewater and environmental services, nearly twice as many as in the UK. In the last three years the company has seen its earnings more than double.

AWI has succeeded despite fierce competition from some of the world’s largest water companies and multi-utilities, the majority of which are based in Europe.

AWI has focused on five key geographical regions: Asia/Pacific; Central/Eastern Europe; Latin America; China and Ireland, often becoming involved in the liberalisation and privatisation of water services in these areas.

In Chile, for example, AWI serves 1.4 million customers via a company it purchased called ESVAL. Similarly, in the Czech Republic, AWI has a controlling interest in three water and wastewater companies serving 1.3 million customers.

Anglian Water’s success in detecting and reducing its leakage rates to industry-leading levels contributed directly in AWI winning contracts to repeat the success for clients in countries including Ireland and Thailand.

Commenting on the award, Patrick O’Leary, managing director of Anglian Water International said: 'We’ve won many awards over the years, but to win a Queen’s award in the jubilee year is very special.

'We’ve always appreciated the ambassadorial role we have when working overseas – this can only strengthen the pride we already have in what we do.'

Anglian Water International is part of infrastructure management group awg plc, which has interests in gas, electricity and rail, as well as water and wastewater.
