AWG soars up environmental performance chart
AWG is one of the best environmental performers in the FTSE350 according to Business in the Environment’s (BIE) latest research findings published this week.
An average score of 99 per cent placed AWG fourth overall – up from 29 last year - and the third best performing utility. Anglian Water, an AWG company, was named number one water company in England and Wales.
A company’s environmental performance is an increasingly important factor for investors. The BIE ‘Index of Corporate Environmental Engagement’ assesses companies’ success in measuring and improving impacts on the environment.
AWG has dedicated itself to environmental excellence for the last five years. Environmental and community issues are now routinely considered and performance painstakingly measured and reported.
Everyone in AWG is committed to its environmental goals, from field technicians to board directors. The goals are tangible and target-based: a committee meets every four months to report on progress and many parts of the company’s management systems have even been certified to ISO14001.
Congratulating AWG on its impressive score for 2001, BIE pointed to a particularly successful programme of environmental awareness and a programme of monitoring environmental management through the company’s top 50 suppliers and contractors.
Paul Woodcock, group director for sustainable development said: 'I am very
pleased that such a highly regarded organisation has recognised AWG for its commitment to the environment. Ultimately, though, it’s an accolade for the thousands of AWG staff and clients’ employees that make it happen.'
Commenting on the results, Derek Higgs, chairman of BIE said: 'These leaders have thrown down the gauntlet. The challenge for their peers is how quickly they can pick it up.'
