World Water Day
Anglian Water invites customers to support WaterAid, the UK charity dedicated exclusively to providing safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene promotion to the world’s poorest people.
To celebrate World Water Day on 22 March, Anglian Water is helping raise awareness of the quarter of the world who lack access to safe water and half the world who have no adequate sanitation. More than five million people, mainly children, die each year without these basic needs which developed countries take for granted.
Ian Wilcockson, an Anglian Water engineer, has visited water and sanitation projects in Southern India, together with Suggs from the band Madness, to see how support for WaterAid has dramatically improved the lives of some of the world’s poorest people.
Ian said: 'I was inspired by the organisation, energy and enthusiasm of all the people involved in providing access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene education. We were so warmly welcomed into every community we visited. They have so little, yet give so much - I want to do whatever I can to help them, and hope our customers will too.'
'I’m really impressed by WaterAid’s work and how they manage to make such a big difference to people’s lives with such limited resources,' said Suggs. 'When turning on the tap or using the loo, I will now spare a thought for people who don’t have the things we take for granted,' he added.
Anglian Water is sending out WaterAid appeal leaflets with bills to more than 1.6 million customers.
