Anglian Water and TXU Europe apply to build revolutionary green energy plant in Corby

Following more than a year of development, a joint venture company formed by TXU Europe and Anglian Water is to apply to Northamptonshire County Council to build a revolutionary green energy plant in Corby - the first of its kind in the UK.

The proposed plant would be built within Anglian Water’s existing sewage treatment works in Corby, and would treat sewage before using it to produce electricity for local homes and businesses.

The new sustainable energy plant would not only help tackle the problem of sewage sludge disposal, but would also generate electricity for local use far more efficiently than traditional methods.

Plans for the proposed plant will be on display in the Hilton, Corby between Thursday 5th and Saturday 7th October for general viewing. Renewable energy experts will also be on hand to answer any questions about the project.

David Edge, Anglian Water’s biosolids manager, said: “Anglian Water is committed to finding local solutions to local issues and the technologies we are hoping to use at Corby will enable us to recycle locally produced natural waste. It will also enable us to use a sustainable fuel to generate energy.”

Dr Keming Zhou, TXU Europe’s project manager, said: “TXU Europe and Anglian Water have been working on this world-leading technology for over a year. In that time we have carried out tests to assess the environmental and economic benefits of the technology. We have developed plans for Corby that will minimise environment impact from biosolids and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to atmosphere when the solids are used to produce green electricity for local consumption.”

Anglian Water and TXU Europe announced the formation of a 50/50 renewable energy joint venture company earlier this year. The joint venture company will develop technology to create a clean, green fuel from which it will generate electricity.
