USFILTER RECEIVES CONTRACT FOR LARGEST MICROFILTRATION PLANT IN THE WORLD FOR WATER RE-USE IN CALIFORNIA

USFilter was awarded a contract to provide the largest microfiltration plant in the world for the Orange County Water District (OCWD) and the Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) in Fountain Valley, California. This is a significant milestone in membrane filtration technology.

The $25 million MemcorŽ continuous microfiltration - submerged (CMF-S) system will be a crucial part of an advanced water reclamation project. The CMF-S system will draw secondary wastewater from the nearby sanitation district, treat it, then inject it into deep groundwater aquifers to prevent seawater intrusion.

When the plant is commissioned in 2004, the 86.7 million gallon per day (328 million liters per day) unit will purify the water to levels that surpass drinking water standards and produce enough water to fill over 1000 Olympic size swimming pools every day.

Located in an arid region, the OCWD sought a more reliable, cost-effective water treatment system as it currently purchases imported water at a high cost and anticipates the local population to reach 2.8 million by 2020.

In 1997, the water and sanitation districts of Orange County formed the Groundwater Replenishment (GWR) system to purify highly treated secondary wastewater which up to now has been released into the ocean. The GWR System will process this wastewater through an intricate membrane treatment plant which will feature a USFilter CMF-S microfiltration unit, reverse osmosis system, and ultraviolet disinfection equipment. This high quality water will be injected into the local groundwater basin as originally planned.
