Vivendi Water Systems Australia Pty Ltd. has won a contract in partnership with
Walter Construction Group Pty Ltd. to refurbish and extend three wastewater treatment plants. Located 100 kilometers to the south of Sydney in the Illawarra region, the plants treat wastewater from 300,000 residents. The contract, worth more than 84 million euros, is with the Sydney Water Corporation. Work will take around 52 months.
The aim of the project is to improve beaches and bathing water, and protect the marine ecosystem over a wide area. Some of the treated water will be recycled for use in industry.
The contract includes the construction of a pipe to transport treated effluent from the existing Bellambi and Port Kembla plants to the main wastewater treatment plant in Wollongong.
The Wollongong plant will be refurbished for the beginning of 2004. Vivendi Water Systems will also design and build treatment trains using tertiary filtration, ultra-violet disinfection, the BiodeniphoŽ biological process, MultifloŽ and ActifloŽ , settling systems, and a biological odor treatment train using the ALIZAIRŽ process.
Once the refurbishment has been completed, the Wollongong plant will be equipped with membrane systems to recycle part of the water. This will be used to supply local industry with 20,000 cubic meters a day of high quality water. The remaining treated water will be discharged into the ocean by a 1-kilometer-long outfall pipe.
The project is part of the
Sydney Water Corporation's Water Plan 21. The plan has set long-term objectives for environmental management and for lasting, reliable water services.
