Niger
Vivendi Water has won a new contract in Niger following an international
invitation
to tender organized with the cooperation of the World Bank. The lease contract
covers the provision of water services for the country's ten million people,
including Niamey the capital city with 600 000 inhabitants. The ten-year
renewable
contract will generate revenues of some 150 million euros during the period
of the contract.
Vivendi Water will create an operating company with ownership of 51% of
the
equity capital. This company will also be awarded a program of work worth 5.5
million euros to install connections and water fountains.
In addition, the backers (principally the World Bank) will finance a
rehabilitation
and extension program to the value of over 35 million euros.
Vivendi Water will improve the technical and commercial efficiency of the
operation
according to criteria set out in the contract.
The number of customers, currently around 58,000, should substantially
increase
over the first five years.
Burkina Faso
Vivendi Water, in partnership with Cabinet Mazars and Guerard, has been
awarded
a five-year support and service contract in Burkina Faso. This is the result
of an international invitation to tender issued by Burkina Faso's national water
and wastewater authority and with World Bank financing.
The contract covers the management of the customer service and finance
activities
for the authority with the assistance of a permanent team of three experts on
site. The contract is aimed to support a program to extend networks and
develop
the number of connections that will allow the Ziga dam to be brought into
service.
This will considerably improve the water resources available to supply the 900
000 inhabitants of the capital city, Ouagadougou.
These two contracts strengthen Vivendi Water's operations in Africa. The
company
already plays a leading role in Gabon, through Société d'Energie et d'Eau du
Gabon (SEEG), which manages water and electricity services for the country's
entire population of 1.1 million under a 20-year concession. In February 2000,
Vivendi Water was also selected to manage the water and electricity services
provided by STEE, the national water and electricity utility of Chad, under
a phase-by-phase concession contract.
Vivendi Water, a subsidiary of Vivendi Environnement,
consolidates
all the activities of Générale des Eaux and USFilter. Vivendi Water is the global
leader of water services and treatment systems serving all market segments -
municipal, industrial, residential/commercial.
Vivendi Water serves over 100 million customers in over 100 countries. With
revenues of 11.9 billion euros for 1999, Vivendi Water employs 67,000 people.
