The Montpellier water district, located in the south of France, has awarded Vivendi Water Systems a contract to upgrade and extend the CEREIREDE wastewater treatment plant at Lattes. This work will expand the facility's capacity from 260,000 to 470,000 PE. The contract, which provides for the design, delivery, and installation of the equipment, is valued at 27.6 million euros (182 million FF).

The project calls for the preservation and renovation of existing structures, a reduction in the space required by the installations to allow for future expansion, and full respect for the "zero nuisance" concept (i.e. free of odour and noise and environment friendly).
This plant will implement an innovative water treatment process combined with conventional activated sludge technology and ultra-compact biofiltration technology (BIOSTYR® process) with a maximum flow capacity of 1.5m3/s.For the first time in France, sludge produced during the wastewater treatment will be treated by thermophile digestion through 3,000m3 digesters. The option to use compact technologies will considerably simplify the construction phase - reducing treatment interruption from 30 to 5 days - and will unable to free two hectares of land for future expansion. Most of the design studies will be completed within a three-month period, a very short deadline which will allow the owner to call for civil engineering tenders during the month of December 2000.
