Al Taweelah A1, a 1,430 MW power and water desalination plant to be inaugurated in Abu Dhabi
Tractebel announces the inauguration this Sunday of a new power and water production plant totalling 1,430 MW of electric power and a daily water production of 385,000 cubic meters. The plant is owned by Gulf Total Tractebel Power Company (GTTP) and located in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The project was awarded in 2000 by the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) to a consortium held equally by Tractebel and Total, following an international tendering procedure. The consortium owns jointly 40% of the new Al Taweelah A1, the remaining 60% is held by ADWEA.
The 1.5 billion dollar project, including a major extension of the plant, was successfully completed on schedule. This, together with the quality of the partners, will secure the projected revenue for the coming 20 years.
Today the plant is the largest independent power and water project (IPWP) in the region and one of the largest co-generation plants in the world. It will produce water and electricity for Abu Dhabi, representing roughly 25% of the total electricity production and 25% of the total water production of the Emirate.
Taweelah A1 has now halved its original carbon dioxide emissions per kilowatt hour and cut its nitrogen oxide emissions by 90%.
Tractebel is present in the region for more than 15 years. In 1994, Tractebel EGI developed the 270 MW Al Manah power plant in the Sultanate of Oman, the first plant to be built, owned and managed by an independent power producer in the Gulf. Tractebel Engineering was extensively involved in developing the Taweelah site prior the privatisation process launched by the Emirate in 1998; it has now played a major role in the technical supervision of the project.
Dirk Beeuwsaert, CEO of Tractebel’s Electricity and Gas International division : “This project consolidates our presence in a region with strong growth potential in electricity, particularly in combined water and power projects. The region offers an investor-friendly environment characterized by long term power and water purchase contracts within a well-developed legal framework. ”
