Taiwan Water Supply Corporation, which supplies drinking water to the island of Taiwan, has entrusted the special-purpose company comprising Ondeo Degrémont (SUEZ) and Ecotek, a subsidiary of the Taiwanese company
China Steel, with the overhaul and operation of a drinking water plant in Kaohsiung, the second largest city on the island.
The total amount of the contract carried out with Ecotek is € 200 million, of which Ondeo Degrémont’s share is € 90 million. The contract covers the overhaul of some of the equipment, building new structures and operating the new plant for a period of 15 years. Designed to improve water quality in this city of 3 million, the new facility will produce 450,000 m3 of drinking water per day as early as March 2004.
Chosen after a series of international calls for tenders, Ondeo Degrémont's solution was judged most economical and technically effective.
In order to reduce water hardness and to eliminate pollutants and the molecules responsible for unpleasant taste and odours, Ondeo Degrémont proposed the most modern technologies: pulsated clarification, caustic soda carbonate removal, sand filtration, ozonation, and activated carbon filtration. All of these effective solutions meet Taiwanese expectations in matters of water quality.
This contract opens important development perspectives in Taiwan, as most of the island's cities are confronted with similar resource problems. It confirms Ondeo Degrémont's ability to implement the most innovative technologies throughout the world, meeting the major challenges faced in water treatment.
