 Schwerin, capital city of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, selects ONDEO to manage its water and wastewater services
ONDEO Services, a Suez subsidiary, has been selected by the municipal authorities of Schwerin for the future management of the city’s water and wastewater services. The concession contract covers the entire population of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in Germany.
The contract entails Stadtwerke Schwerin GmbH (SWS) - a multi-utilities company - ceding 49% of its water business, one of its core activities. Currently 100% state-owned, these shares will be transferred to a newly-founded company due to take over the management of water activities in the City of Schwerin. EURAWASSER, a joint ONDEO Services/Thyssen subsidiary has agreed to purchase these shares for 13.8 million euros. The other 51% will remain under the control of the local authorities. Turnover for the first year of this contract is expected to reach 13.7 million euros.
By acquiring these shares, ONDEO Services becomes a strategic partner of the City of Schwerin, providing drinking water to 100,000 inhabitants, a population that requires 6 million m3 of water per year. ONDEO Services will also be responsible for managing a wastewater plant with 90 pumping stations.
“By integrating the premier water solutions provider in the heart of the city’s waterworks management, Schwerin will benefit from Eurawasser’s proven experience in the neighbouring towns of Rostock and Güstrow. Furthermore, we aim to optimise all water activities in the city whilst respecting the ecological management prerogatives of this region” added Gérard Payen, Chairman and CEO, ONDEO.
With this new contract, ONDEO Services serves a total of 630,000 inhabitants in Germany, notably Rostock, Goslar, Leuna and Güstrow. In 2000, EURAWASSER registered revenues of 71 million euros.
