CANMORE, ALTA/EDMONTON – Canmore’s Town Council voted unanimously
on Tuesday night to accept a10-year agreement with EPCOR Water Services. The
agreement is the first of its kind in Alberta and will see EPCOR Water
Services provide complete utility services to Canmore: water and wastewater
treatment, storm drainage, biosolids composting, and utility metering and
account management. The deal is worth $1.5 million per year and will save the
Town over $1 million in operating costs over the first five years of the
agreement.
Mayor Ron Casey praised the Town Administration for their innovative
thinking. "It’s ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking’ that has lead to the
agreement with EPCOR," said Casey. "Canmore has a great opportunity
to benefit from the expertise of a known leader in the water industry as we
seek ways to keep rates stable and meet the community’s growing needs."
"Our agreement with the Town of Canmore will provide assurance that
they will receive advanced technology and skilled people to meet their growing
demands," said Allan Davies, President of EPCOR Water Services.
The two have agreed on a contract start date of May 15, pending approval
from the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board. Over the next six weeks, the Town
of Canmore and EPCOR will be developing a transition plan for the transfer of
the operations. EPCOR will also retain all of Canmore’s staff and honour all
union agreements.
"EPCOR is looking forward to being part of the community," said
Davies. "We hope that the residents will come to see EPCOR as part of the
greater Canmore community as we look to improve service levels and water
quality in the future."
